Q&A: Karifur reports from the Tumult Championships

The Tumult Championships are underway around the globe, and reports are starting to come in from duels that have already finished. Our own Karifur (the tokens lady) checked in after her recent event.

What was the atmosphere/energy like?

Everyone was very excited to be playing in the event. The staff and other players were very welcoming and positive. The games were a lot of fun (even the Sigismar ones) because everyone was clearly having a good time. We even had some new players that we had never seen before, which was pretty exciting.

What kinds of interesting play did you see?

We were happy to see every faction was represented (although not every hero). It was great to see people playing Sierra and Atsadi, who are among the least represented players according to the recent numbers from Equinox. I was even more excited to see they both made it to the top 8. I was really rooting for one of them to win, but alas it was not to be.

How did people represent their factions?

The “Best Representation” award of the event has to go to the Fen player who showed up in this amazing suit covered in brightly-colored graffiti-style art. It was fantastic. He’s also just a great guy who always brings so much positive energy.

How did your matches go? What was a key play you felt good about?

Well. I went 3-3 which obviously wasn’t great, but it could have been worse. I had just rebuilt my deck the night before so it was untested against most decks, but I had a lot of fun with it. My favorite moment was probably when I got to play my Atsadi-style unique with four cards in reserve, then a rare Amahle to discard all of those cards to draw four new cards. Good times.

How did the championship match go?

Unfortunately we weren’t there for the championship match. We had driven down along with another friend of ours from Fargo and still had about four hours to drive home again, and we were all pretty tired, so after our friend lost in round 1 of the Top 8, we decided to head back early.

What did players think of the prizing?

The shop didn’t receive their championship kit in time for the event so we didn’t actually get to see the special cards or the playmat on the day. However, the shop took down the top 8 players’ information and sent out the prizing when they did receive it. For the rest of us, they were very generous with the prize packs, which was also a pleasant surprise. Additionally, one of the staff from the shop had very kindly put up six uniques from their own personal collection for the top six players which was really cool.

What was your overall read of the experience?

We had a great time. I was of course a little disappointed to see Sigismar dominate the finals because I was hoping to see a more balanced distribution of heroes, but that really doesn’t diminish the experience for me.

After the event, Karifur also shared a podcast detailing the experience. Check out our reporting on the Tumult Championships, such as an interview with Cédric Leblanc, the new organized play director at Equinox. The Tumult Championships will be taking place between April 5-May 11, and operate as the culmination of the season’s Organized Play for Trial by Frost.
