Q&A: Cohlrabi reports from the Tumult Championships

The last few Tumult Championships are still on the way as Kuraokami chooses which faction to align with. Cohlrabi reported in after his recent event.

What was the atmosphere/energy like?

Good vibes all around, we are all a very friendly bunch and play together almost every week. Event started earlier in the morning so it wasn’t too loud or chaotic in the store yet so that was lovely.

What kinds of interesting play did you see?

Ellio is in my local group and always brings something interesting. It was a surprise to see him on Kojo and seemingly ramping towards something. I am not sure of his full deck list but it was scary. He was the one who ended up winning the event. We also had a Lindiwe player which was awesome to see, but I didn’t get matched against them during the event.

How did people represent their factions?

I am most likely the most diehard when it comes to a specific faction (Muna) so most other people just played a deck they were enjoying at the moment or thought would be good for the event. Nobody was on Ordis because it is pretty boring and not something anyone would rally for.

How did your matches go? What was a key play you felt good about?

I made the classic mistake of not building my deck on cardboard until the night before. I had told myself I was going to start doing it four days before and… that didn’t happen. This became a major issue when I realized that I only had one Rare Aloe and one Rare Spindle, Muna Bastion, actually in my physical collection. I was lucky enough to have Ellio bring me one rare bastion (I own three digitally) so I was able to use two of those, but I had to change my deck entirely otherwise. I am overall pretty happy with how the deck ended based on what I actually have on paper, but it wasn’t what I planned to play.

How did the championship match go?

It was a nice friendly battle between two good friends, so we were all just hanging out and watching as they finished their match.

What did players think of the prizing?

Our local game store of course tossed in some extra prizing in the way of organized play booster packs from Season 1 and Season 2, so everyone was very happy. The scout cards are super cool and since we only had six people, every person got one whether they won highest in that faction or not. (They just got to pick out of the 2 remaining).

The foil thicc tumult cards are amazing too! And the mat seemed really nice but Ellio said I am not allowed to touch it.

What was your overall read of the experience?

It was great! The event was nice and the structure was really enjoyable, I am not the biggest fan of best-of-3 for everything because it just takes soooo long. I don’t really get too hung up on the whole “If it was Bo3 then I totally would have been able to beat this person”

My only wish would be that more people came out and attended the event. Our area has been rough to get people together and I am not entirely sure why. But Texas is huge, so it’s difficult. Shoutout to TastyBacon who drove up from Austin to play with us, I hope to do the same down in Austin/Houston if possible.
