Online BGA World Championship Qualifiers allow up to 2k players each

The three free online World Championships Qualifier events to be held on Board Game Arena will welcome up to 2,048 players each. Those competitors will be spread across four tournament groups of 512 for the two-day events. Registration details have not been made public yet.

The first day of each of the three qualifiers will see players running 10 rounds of Swiss best-of-1 play with 30-minute rounds. The Top 32 players from those rounds will face five single-elimination, best-of-3 matches with 60-minute rounds.

The winner of each will earn their qualification to the World Finals in Paris later this fall (the official date is yet to be announced, but will be at least Oct. 3 after the release of the Skybound Odyssey set) with travel and accommodations paid. They’ll also win a Top 8 playmat, a Faction Champion card and organized play boosters. The Top 8 players will receive a Top 8 playmat and organized play boosters. The top-ranked player for each faction will receive their World Champion Qualifier Faction Champion card, regardless of where they land in the overall rankings.

The dates for the competitions are as follows:

  • European Online Qualifier (UTC+2) – Aug. 16-17
  • American Online Qualifier (UTC-4) – Sept. 6-7
  • Asian Online Qualifier (UTC+9) – Sept. 27-28

All of the qualifier events are open to all players regardless of nationality or how many tournaments they’ve played in previously.

The BGA qualifiers will be run with rules reflecting the Whispers from the Maze midseason patch, according to an Equinox post in the official Discord server. The article detailing the patch will release July 29, but not go into effect until after the Dallas, Texas, qualifier event (Aug. 10 at the earliest).

BGA has continued to be a popular resource for players. The WFM demo deck online tournament filled 512 openings in literally five minutes, and the Tournament Sponsorship Program has provided an online option for advancing a player’s Adventure Pass.
