Altered ranks in top 20 most played games on BGA in August

Altered marks another month in the top rankings of Board Game Arena, taking 18th place of most games played, according to a Board Game Geek post. The top 25 most-played games for the month accounted for 47% of all of the global share. More than 101,000 games of Altered were played during the month.

The post’s infographic lists Altered as the only “customizable game” on the list, running alongside “abstract,” “family” and “strategy” for the month.

August included one of the largest competitive tournaments in BGA history, the European-focused World Championship Qualifier Aug. 16-17. That event, which hosted 1,142 players, saw Giacomozuu team up with Basira to take the win away from Tempetedelaneige and Treyst. Both will be joining the other finalists at the World Championship Finals in Paris Oct. 17-19. But even without the the BGA Qualifier’s boost, Altered was nearly 8,000 games ahead of its next follower, Race for the Galaxy.

Two more online Qualifiers are on the way, providing more chances for players to rack up additional games in practice as well as at the competitions. The Americas-focused online BGA Qualifier runs Sept. 6-7, is free and currently open for registration. The first-place winner will get travel and accommodations paid to join other winners at the World Championship Finals, and all of the Top 8 will receive an exclusive Top 8 playmat and organized play boosters. The highest-ranking player for each faction will receive a World Champion Qualifier Faction Champion card. The Eastern Asia online BGA Qualifier will run Sept. 13-14.

Altered has been among the Top 25 games played each month on BGA since its release last year, and was a nominee for the 2025 BGA Awards. Online play has been a key part of the game’s growth through ongoing events like the regular AWOL, ACE and AQZ tournaments. The Whispers from the Maze demo deck online tournament filled all 512 spots within five minutes of registration’s opening.
