Bob reports from the Tumult in Wigan UK
I went to a tumult in Wigan (near Manchester in the UK) at a shop called Evolution Trading Cards. It was a really nice community there. There were 5 players in total with 2 Muna players (Teija), an Axiom player (Sierra) and a Bravos player (Atsadi). I was running Treyst deck, because I felt it had the best ‘usable’ uniques in my collection.
There were no proxies allowed at this event so it was kind of a ‘draft at home’ situation. A lot of people had incomplete sets of rares and borderline playable uniques – but I was really glad to get to play with these people at a time where POD wasn’t available yet. We were all sort of playing these cobbled together decks, perhaps one of the last moments in Altered history that we’ll do that. We were pretty much drafting from our own physical collections in this fashion and I felt sort of privileged to get to play this way.
Every opponent was such a good sport, and one of the muna players was the young daughter of the other Axiom player. She played very well, winning a lot of her games and coming at me with a lot of (slightly intimidating I will say) confidence. It was great to see a wide range of ages playing the game together and the father & daughter combo was very sweet.
All the games were tough, all the games felt close, which is why a lot of us enjoy Altered so much. We joked that I would frame the ‘Hooked’ card because my opponents felt it was such an impactful card during our games.
The final game against Mike on an undefeated Muna (Teija) was pretty tense, he was running a nasty unique Quetzalcoatl that anchored a target on opponent draw/resupply which seemed bad news on Treyst. Luckily (and with some restraint on my behalf to not use Treyst’s ability every round) he wasn’t able to anchor it quickly enough and get good enough value of it, I was able to eek out the final victory and secure my championship mat, going 5-0 with Mike going 4-1.
Great store and small but dedicated and welcoming altered community, if you’re in the area then I recommend playing some Altered TCG at such a friendly place.
