Character Creation Guide shares faction backgrounds, aesthetics, lore

Cosplayers, fan artists and roleplayers can see their path forward among the six factions through the new Character Creation Guide published by Equinox. The guide, which will be available on the Resources section of the Altered website, provides detailed notes on the design and aesthetics of heroes from each background.

Beyond providing details for the creation of original characters and costumes, the guide serves as a quick lore sketch for each faction, covering their histories, cities and culture. New players looking for a way to see which faction they connect most with aesthetically can start with this document. Testing out the right play style can still be done using the free starter decks on Board Game Arena.

Between Altered booth appearances at UK Games Expo (May 30-June 1) and Gen Con 2025 (July 31-Aug. 3), players will have opportunities to cosplay characters from their favorite factions as the Whispers from the Maze season unfolds. New chances at related contests will be coming soon, according to Lokinox in the Discord news post sharing the guide.

The guide covers each of the six factions, focusing first on each group’s overall spirit and guiding ideologies from the perspective of the game’s lore. From there, it provides information around each faction’s bastion, which have also shown up as cards in the Beyond the Gates set, such as Axiom’s Foundry or Lyra’s Ouroboros, the home of the Expeditionary Corps as they traverse the Tumult.

A section on dress code aesthetics, complete with multiple sample sketches, will be most helpful to cosplayers representing a particular look. Some highlights are shared to get to the basic key notes that make a costume come together.

There are also details on each faction’s magic capabilities, related companions and eidolons and overall culture, followed by a summing up of each group’s outlook.

Since the game’s release, fan artists and creators have been sharing their own takes on daily faction life and the heroes through the Art and Custom channel on the official Discord server. Equinox released an official Fan Content Policy in March that details how creators can interact with and use Altered IP as a part of the community.
