Auraq takes leading role in London World Championship Qualifier
Moondust teamed up with Auraq to take the top spot at the World Championship Qualifier in London Sept. 13. Zerosuitsamuss picked up second working with Treyst. The event was one of multiple Qualifiers that weekend, including one in Baltimore, Maryland.
The 70-player competition run by OrganizedPlayEvents ran eight rounds of Swiss, cutting to a single-elimination Top 8.
Overall, Sigismar took the most decklists, according to 39cards.com. Teija picked up second, followed by a tie between Kojo, Basira and Treyst. Only five players came along with Fen in the event. Of the cards that made it to the Top 8, 54% represented Beyond the Gates, 16% came from TBF and 30% came from Whispers from the Maze.
Moondust’s Auraq deck builds a resupply and draw machine that provides card advantage at a terrifying rate, along with ways to bounce cards back to hand and reduce cost.
- All three of the deck’s uniques, a Studious Disciple (1/1) and two Paper Heralds (1/2, each), trigger a resupply on any character play with a 0 statistic.
- Of the rares, a full playset each of Scribbling Starfish, Haven Seiringar and Nyala continue to pile on the additional card draw and interaction.
- Two rare Kodama and Ouroboros Inkcaster each provide anchor for the uniques to provide ongoing reserve support, while bouncing cards back to hand or reducing cost to play overall. Even one reduction in mana cost made eight of the deck’s characters either free to play from hand or reserve.
- One rare Sandman adds sleep interaction, while an Ouroboros Croupier brings in slightly higher stats along with a cost-reduction support ability.
- Notable commons include Bliss Fans that have no way to trigger their ability in the deck but serve as a reliable 1-drop from reserve providing another 0. Will-o’-the-Wisp adds in some board control, and the Hatter provides the same anchor support as Kodama.
Prizing and next Qualifier
Moondust will join other finalists (such as Rinku from the Dallas, Texas, Qualifier) with travel and accommodations paid to the World Championship Finals Oct. 17-19. The Top 8 all received a Top 8 playmat, and the highest-placing player for each faction received their Faction Champion card.
The last World Championship Qualifier will be held in Athens, hosted by Organized Play Events Sept. 26-28.
