Five ways to get ready for Skybound Odyssey

Skybound Odyssey prerelease events are less than two weeks out, beginning in local game stores Sept. 26. There’s a lot going on in the lead-up to the new set, so here’s a quick recap of several high points to keep an eye on.

LGS events and prerelease kits

Local stores can already organize SKY prerelease events by connecting with their Asmodee representative. Working through their rep is the only way to get one of the new redesigned prerelease kits, evolving from the ones debuted in Whispers from the Maze. Each one contains a guaranteed unique card, plus seven boosters, an acrylic first-player token, a set of adventure cards, a punch-out marker card and a deckbuilding guide.

Prerelease events are built around a limited format with a 30-card deck containing three factions and a hero.

BGA Demo Deck Tournament

Players can join in the SKY Board Game Arena Demo Deck Tournament Sept. 21, giving the opportunity to try out one of six premade decks with a new hero and some cards from the upcoming set. The top player of each faction will be awarded 20 promo boosters and six SKY booster packs.

The event, done in partnership with AWOL, will run eight rounds of Swiss leading into a Top 16, all played Best-of-1 format.

Once the tournament has completed, the decks will remain available for players to try out for free on BGA. Registration for the tournament opens Sept. 18 on the AWOL Discord server.

This event follows on the success of the WFM BGA Demo Deck event, which filled to its 512-player capacity within five minutes of the registration link being posted.

Tumult Championships

The last WFM Tumult Championships ended Sept. 14, with hundreds taking place in LGSs around the world. Players were able to take their best decks to compete for an exclusive playmat and faction champion cards. Similar to the Trial by Frost Tumult Championships, with each win, the winning decklist’s faction earns a point. The faction with the most points (that hasn’t won a reward in the past Tumult) will earn a brand-new card. For WFM, that’s Sofia, The First Outpost, a new landmark. Those points will also affect how the game’s lore develops, with the factions split on how to handle The Hunger. The cards are provided to all Altered accounts, both present and future, and can be printed and added to decks as needed.

If you’ve played in a Tumult Championship, take two minutes to share a few details about the event in a community project put together by Eazy to collect data on the winning factions and heroes.

SKY balance patch

As with previous sets, a new balance patch is expected to be shared in the upcoming weeks to the new set. For WFM, the season patch landed May 13, more than two weeks ahead of the set’s May 30 prerelease. The SKY patch could show up at any time. Any changes will have an impact on the upcoming World Championship Finals, which will also have brand-new cards from SKY to work with as well.

The WFM midseason patch saw Afanas’s hero ability modified, causing spells with a hand cost of 1 mana or less to gain fleeting.

Check out card reveals

While some of the new cards in SKY won’t be revealed until the BGA Demo Deck Tournament, many of them have already been shared publicly. A few of them made their debut right here on the Blog. Content creators will be doing reveals through Sept. 18, so be sure to support our community and check them out. Once you’ve done that, follow up with our collection of cards shown so far, or aguytrying’s spreadsheet. The Altered website is updating cards as they’re shared as well, including each new character’s unique art.
