Skybound Odyssey card reveal: Leviathans spotted ready to party
The Leviathans of Skybound Odyssey are awe-inspiring, tremendous creatures that are a sight to behold. Some of them can show a playful side, while others give only wrath. No matter what faction you come from, it’s imperative to keep an eye out for them while sailing the skies.
Before we get to the card, take a quick trip with me to Gen Con 2025 (where I got to sit with François Jourdain, lead game designer for the Whispers from the Maze set for a very gracious hour-long interview). My friend and I had just driven in from a few states away, and I was immediately pulled into opening a Skybound Odyssey pack to grab a clip of my reaction. That clip, including the point where I exhaustedly realize that I’m holding a unique that I cannot say a word about, made it into this video.
I can mention now that the pack started off with Sakarabru’s Fury (revealed by PascoloTCG), as well as a few others that haven’t been shared yet. Coming away from the pack, I kept thinking about one of the Bravos cards I’d seen, and how it could be played in really interesting ways with a mechanic that hasn’t been seen yet elsewhere in Altered. That card is the one I’m sharing today.
I’ve been writing enough lately, though. I asked the rest of the Blog team to share some of their initial reactions:

The theme and the effect instantly align for me – always a great sign for content design. Another thing I like about this is the mindgames it creates. While revealing an Akhlut or The Hunger from hand is not beneficial, it lets you do some meme plays like “revealing a Hunger only to mana it next turn, leaving the opponent scared anyway.”
The guy on the right looks like he really wanted to crash this picture. Good for him and his Pepsi-pants.

Why am I excited? Because you can play him from reserve, reveal a biggie and get your card, then play something like Helping Hand or Bravos Vanguard to allow the Spotter to come back on back next turn to spot another biggie that is still in your hand. Rinse and repeat.

Kojo has in the current meta not many 4-cost characters in the deck, so this doesn’t seem as a fit at the moment. But with the upcoming reveals it might be really strong. But due the nature of the aggression of the fast-paced Kojo, it probably doesn’t see play here. It can be used though in a form of Foundry deck list though!
Basira is playing a lot of 4+ chars already with Akhlut, Mighty Jinn and Hunger, so might be a great addition here. Only downside is you don’t get a boost with this card by himself so need things like Haven to make sure you can use the boost of Basira.
Atsadi – Perfect card for Atsadi! He needs more draw for consistency so having Seiringar and this one is great. I think every Atsadi deck will run at least one or more copies of the Spotter! Atsadi has plenty of chars to show and everybody expects Saka, Hunger or Kaibara being in a hand of an Atsadi player. Also great with Mighty and Swifty, so many option you can show off in this deck, and probably an absolute cracker!

My first impression of this card immediately was, “This card is really well thought out thematically, lorewise and mechanically.” It all just fits together amazingly. I also love how many appearances we see of Halua on different cards, which makes me so excited to be learning more about the different leviathans with this set.
The evolution between the common and the rare art is really amazing and adding to that the mechanical change being an increase in Mountain stats, it shows the Leviathan Spotter as a more experienced version, better prepared and now also having learned how to spot properly in the mountain terrain regions! They look better-equipped and more important and it gets me really curious about the evolution to the unique art.

I’m just going to go through the cards one at a time and share my thoughts in the order they come to me.
Common:
- Oh hai there Halua!
- Cool horn, friend
- This man looks so serious
Rare:
- Okay 3/2/2 now we’re talking!
- Hey, looks like our man learned the bagpipes. Good for him
- Oh look, another little Bravos friend is sailing into frame on the left hand side. Nice
- I definitely want to try this in the Atsadi deck I keep telling myself I want to build
OOF:
- I don’t play Yzmir in constructed so I’m honestly not sure what Yzmir players will think of this
Final thoughts:
- Justice Wong did a great job on this art, as always. The details are incredible
- I wonder what the unique art looks like. Did he get a third instrument?
- I hope the foil version will have little music notes coming out of the horn or something like that
Make sure to check out our reveal from earlier this week, as well as our collection of all the cards shared so far. Don’t miss aguytrying’s Reveals breakdown, and look for the next cards to be found through other creators like us. Skybound Odyssey begins prerelease Sept. 26.
