Tournament Sponsorship Program narrows scope
Online tournaments no longer qualify for the Altered Tournament Support program, according to a change to the program’s page at some point after March 12. While they can still qualify for Adventure Pass points as long as the event is organized through a professional store account, the standard kit including promotional boosters is not an option, regardless of player count or store account.
The change is a result of international policy challenges, according to Equinox.
“We have removed sponsorship for online events due to difficulties with the different policies across countries regarding video game competitions, as BGA can be considered a video game, and also to prevent potential abuse from organizers,” said an Equinox spokesperson. “However, it is still possible to run an online tournament that allows players to progress in their Adventure Pass by partnering with a local game store.”
The initial wording for the article didn’t rule out online events, and during the Feb. 19 AMA, Eric Dieulangard, chief marketing officer for Equinox, confirmed that online events were eligible for prize support as long they were organized and directed through a professional store account. This is no longer the case.
The article’s updated language says that “Online events and other types of non-competitive events are not eligible for the Altered tournament support program. This means they cannot fulfill the necessary requirements to receive a standard kit. However, if these events are organized through a professional store account, participating players will be able to earn points in their Adventure Pass.”
Organizers are invited to contact Asmodee directly if their events do not align with the categories named in the article.
The program is meant to provide additional prize support to draw more players to events.
