Waru at town square!
Waru has not seen much play last season after the nerf. With the new additions of Whispers from the Maze, he might see more play. With the addition of the new continuous support mechanic, we can do a lot with counters. To maximize this, I run Aby who is a fairly good card on her own, but shines when you got counter in the expedition zone, reserve and landmark zone! Let’s dive in the list.
Gameplan
This deck work perfectly with being a little behind, getting value created by the bureaucrats over time to win with cards like overseer, issitoq or lake. Town square or nurture gives you an extra boost to win an expedition, which can be double by Aby.
Card choices
Bureaucrats
Legate and Leo are here to sabotage as much as possible. Legate can sabotage on her own, but you need to lose the expedition. Leo can sabotage even when winning, but you need to have a counter on one of your landmarks or in reserve to activate it. Keep legate in your opening hand and Leo in later stages of the game.
Attorney is normally played in the rare version. I noticed a lot of the times I just play attorney on T1 without anything next to it. That is why choose for the common over the rare and use the slot somewhere else.
Thoth is a very good early game and late game character that also spawns two token for town square to be buffed and to get counters
Overseer will spawn you a token or four. Play this after a turn you had some bureaucrats in play already and you have suddenly a lot of small bodies ready to be boosted by town square!
Issitoq is here to make sure we can crawl back into the game by focusing on one lane. As it gets sleep we are able to have it two days in a row. Make sure you place this in a lane that is behind, so your overseer can help you get the bodies needed.
Other character:
Ordis crier and dispatcher: both are here to have counters for Leo to be removed and can both be used to put onto the field without sleep. These will make sure we have sufficient stats available from reserve to be played. These work very well with sleeping bureaucrats: play crier/dispatcher, get them in reserve, play your bureaucrats and get the counters, next turn play them out of reserve to get a full board with high stats due the fact the bureaucrats are still on the field!
Aby is a very nice addition to the deck. She can be played with or without scout. With town square we can give a lot of tokens a boost, which can be doubled with Aby while also be able to augment town square itself. When placed in a behind expedition with lake on the field you can give lake a counter and augment it as well. Possibly trigger it when you already had one counter. Niche mechanic: if you trigger it with Aby’s scout mechanic, you can give Aby the sleep effect and send her to reserve to lose the sleep effect. This can sometimes prevent you from having to choose an awkward target!
Other cards
Rallying call, Nurture: Both cards can give us a boost needed to augment with Aby or be able to push a lane with enough stats. Note that both spells can be played twice. Rallying call also provides a waking up effect for are slept bureaucrats, which is sometimes needed to close out games.
Teamwork training and License Withdrawal are my chosen removal suite. Teamwork training can often hit a target up to 6 mana with all the tokens we have and License withdrawal can remove permanents and boosted chars. Note that nurture and rallying call also can give a boost to an opponent char. This way we can easy remove all chars to be played!
Icebound Lake is here to come back into the game and hopefully get a 2-0. Next to an opponent’s char, your bureaucrats are good target to sleep. Issitoq is specific a good card to sleep. You can spawn your dragon next to issitoq so you have some stats there available, and sleep the issitoq. This way you can easy go 1-0 few turns in a row.
Rune’s Testament: this deck works with being behind. If your opponent has a bad draw and you are winning expeditions at the start, will mean several cards like overseer and lake are dead draws. To prevent this Rune’s testament is the perfect card. Being able to not go forward, draw two cards and trigger your when your expedition fails to move forward effects are great!
Town square is here to buff up your tokens. This card is great in combination with Overseer to buff the tokens and get the counters back on it by the tokens. This card is really good way to get some stats on the field. You can even boost, play Aby to give everything a boost again!
