Whispers from the Maze set details, trailer released
The reveal season for the upcoming Whispers from the Maze set is starting now, with a new official post sharing details such as the overall number of cards and which heroes will be returning. Along with the post, the set’s trailer dropped, previewing a few new characters even beyond what was shared this past weekend at PAX East.
Set details
WFM introduces a total of 282 new cards, which includes 12 returning heroes:
- Treyst and Subhash
- Atsadi and Basira
- Teija and Rin
- Waru and Gulrang
- Akesha and Afanas
- Nevenka and Fen
In the past Trial by Frost set, returning heroes were chosen to develop draft play; a hero not returning in this set doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t get cards supporting their play styles. Notably missing is Sigismar, who up to this point in the TBF season has tied with Afanas for the most wins overall (and also taken the lead for most common hero in second through fifth). Another significant absence is Kojo, who can rely on Booda to provide a free 2/2/2 every other turn. Lindiwe, a distinctly technical hero, has the dubious distinction of being the only hero to have shown up in just Beyond the Gates. The heroes are still able to be played, but won’t be showing up in draft or sealed play in the upcoming season.
The total number of new cards breaks down to 15 common cards per faction (90) plus rares for that faction (90) and the out-of-faction rares (90). That matches this set to TBF exactly as far as new cards are concerned, though some specific differences remain. TBF’s OOF rare distribution saw three factions (Yzmir, Muna and Bravos) picking up 16 cards, with the other three (Axiom, Lyra and Ordis) getting 14 (as always, thanks to A Guy Trying for maintaining ongoing card reveals and spoilers). It’s currently unclear how the spread might change for WFM. (Editor’s note: An earlier version of this post incorrectly shared that there were five token slots with two unknown confirmed for this set.)
Booster packs
Booster packs for WFM will carry the same odds of finding rares and uniques as in TBF, with two slots guaranteed as rares and a third slot either a rare (87.5% chance) or unique (12.5% chance). That keeps the same 1-in-8 odds for uniques seen from the game’s official release.
Tokens and foilers will now be printed on the front and back of the same card. While the token’s art remains fully the same, it gives tokens the capability to be “unique” while also reducing overall card waste. A new Adventure Track will share a card in boosters (27.8%) roughly every four packs.
Some additional set details, such as information about triptych card art, the upcoming pre-release packs and Gamegenic accessories, were previously shared in the WFM mechanics preview article.
Upcoming patch and AMA
The next AMA, meant to be related to WFM’s release, will be sometime in the week of May 19-25, according to Lokinox on a stream during PAX East. Based on the milestone plan set by the team’s TBF patch, the WFM patch should be expected to land closeby. The TBF patch was released Jan. 30, with the game’s first pre-release events happening Jan. 24.
The WFM official release date is June 6, with pre-releases beginning May 30. The set’s Tumult Championships will run from July 26-Sept. 7. Those events will be running concurrently with qualifiers for the first Altered World Championships, which begin in June.
